Creation of Digital Bangladesh

Recently, Sheikh Hasina, the Chief of Awami League has expressed her willingness of establishing “Digital Bangladesh”. From scientific point of view, it can be analyzed as she wants to equip the country with relevant and effective technologies under the supervision of the real scientists and technologists to reach the benefits of modern technologies to the remote and disadvantaged people of the country. In such process, the women, children and old people are benefited the most. The terms; Tele-centre, tele-health, tele-education, tele-medicine and other different types of tele-services are involved in the project of digital country like Bangladesh.

There are lots of steps forward to make the mission a success. Owing to the wide differences in the division of labour and educational background, it is not possible for all people to be scientists or technologists. But it is possible for the general public to understand the basics of science, to understand the scientific methods of thinking, to understand the practical approach to scientific exploration, to understand the relation between science and society, to understand the potentials of scientists and their limitations. We must agree that it is not so easy to become a real scientist, but it is possible for the public to gain an understanding of science and enjoy the fruits of science. For example; all cannot sing songs but can enjoy when others sing.

The new government should be encouraged to include activities aimed at increasing public understanding of science in our national plans for development. This can be achieved through education, including school education as well as science education for the whole society, so that each member of society can benefit from science education. It is in fact, a right that every citizen should enjoy. For example, the President of Uganda has made science compulsory for all up to 12th grade of education. Before going to university, the students of Uganda become scientifically literate.

We know social development largely depends on the advancement of science. The present generation has a responsibility to develop science for sustainable development and to impart scientific knowledge to future generations. They should advise youngsters about creative activities and put them on the right track for the future leadership of scientific development.

Modern science is characterized by complexity and diversity. No single discipline can solve these complicated problems. With the rapid development of information and communication technology (ICT), the creation, dissemination, transfer and application of scientific knowledge are much faster than ever before. Scientific development is also promoted by global competition and collaboration. It is the responsibility of the present generation to forecast the trend for science development and to lead future generations in the right direction. There will be greater achievements in physical science, life science, information and communication science and geo-science in near future. Natural science and social science will be combined more closely to provide solutions to problems.

Mathematics is still the basis of natural science, technology, engineering, economics and management sciences. Breakthroughs in life science based on molecular biology will bring about revolutionary achievements in agriculture, medicine and human health. Extensive applications of demand-driven information science will bring big changes in social structure and lifestyle. Advances in brain and cognitive science, psychology and behavioral science will give rise to a revolution in human education, information feedback and social development. Geo-science will become more comprehensive and focus on exploring unutilized mineral resources such as Zircon, Ilmenite, Rutile, Garnet, Titanium etc. available in Bangladesh.

The present generation has a responsibility to establish a sound viewpoint of scientific social value, and to apply science in the promotion of social and economic development. Science provides us with the latest thoughts and instruments for recognizing complicated process of nature and human society. Scientific discovery is still the foundation of the technological development and revolution. Science presents new means for peaceful coexistence between man and nature, and between different peoples. Scientific knowledge, methodology and evidences are used to enhance social civilization and decision making. Advancement in science is also the basis for the eradication of poverty and inequity, improvement of human civilization and common development and improvement of the people’s quality of life. We expect our new government will give much importance in shaping the country as real “Digital Bangladesh”.
