Very exciting message have come to the today’s (19th April 2009) news paper “Amader Shomoy” that a modern technology university is going to be established at Gopalgonj. According to the report, the education minister has already given order to the concerned authority to start works for successful completion. The present government, particularly the education minister should be praised for the valuable and visionary initiative. In last few months, I have written many articles on different news papers raising the importance of science and technology institute leading to digital university at Gopalgonj. May be it is the reflection of my application in favour of the local people. It is really surprising how we passed about four decades (forty years) after liberation without a university at the birth place of the father of the nation, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. At present about one hundred universities consisting of public, private, national and international universities are functioning at different regions of Bangladesh but not a single university in the greater districts of Faridpur that composes of Gopalgonj, Madaripur, Shariatpur, Faridpur and Rajbari. Does it mean there was not a single conscious citizen in the region?
As a senior citizen and well wisher of the locality, it is desired that the university should be the first Science and Technology based Digital University in Bangladesh with the name “Mujib University of Science and Technology (MUST)” to keep the father of nation alive in the heart of people coming from generation to generation. Or to give importance to research activities, the university may be named as “Mujib University for Scientific and Technological Research (MUSTR)”. I believe through establishment of the research oriented science and technology/digital University at Gopalgonj, the real history of liberation war and the role of the father of the nation in establishing the independent Bangladesh will be clear to new generations and the foreigners who will visit the country.
Moreover, the university will bear the history of creation of digital Bangladesh by his very competent daughter Sheikh Hasiana who has initiated the politics of change of days through proper utilization of science and technology under digital Bangladesh concept.
The existing universities in the country are not in good reputation. Most universities need overhauling for running them in right ways. The emerging digital university at Gopalgonj should have the important departments like Information and Communication Technology (ICT), Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering, Electrical and Electronic Engineering (EEE), Electronics and Telecommunications Engineering (ETE), Space Technology, Transport technology, Power Engineering and nanotechnology. The opening of modern subjects in the university carries special significance that needs wide discussions. The Gopalgonj based university should be the model University for making a corruption free digital Bangladesh. Almost all of us have a wrong idea that we don’t have teachers to teach modern subjects. With full confidence, it should be said there is no shortage of teachers for teaching the modern subjects among the Bangalees living at home or abroad. We need only strong determination and, proper cooperation and coordination among us to reach the goal.
