Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, gave a call to the nation to create an Independent Bangladesh about four decades ago. The message was not clear to most people at that time. Hundreds of questions of various types came from different people of different corners. Who will be (Ayub Khan Or Yahia Khan) the President of the new country? Where will you get the ministers? Will they come from Europe, America or Russia? These were the common questions from different levels of people. Many of them could not believe that a separate independent country is possible in Bengal. Lack of confidence among a group of people was harmful to liberation movement. Criticisms and taunts were normal affairs in those days and open discussion on the issue was not possible even in the university areas. After a long struggle, sufferings and sacrifices of lakhs of people we achieved our “Independent Bangladesh” and the dream of father of the nation was thus fulfilled on 16th December 1972.
Several decades later, Sheikh Hsina’s recent call for creation of a digital Bangladesh has come to similar position. People are asking questions; what will be the shape of digital Bangladesh? How the common people will benefit out of it? Can it provide food to the hungry people or water to the thirsty people? Surprisingly many of them are qualified and experienced in their respective areas but not in digital technology. Digital illiteracy is a big problem in most developing countries in the world. In that case we have a positive side; our total population is around one hundred fifty million and a good percentage of them are science or technologically qualified. They are already efficient or they may need short training for bringing them to the desired stages. From my personal experience in related field for several decades, it can be stated that Bangladesh don’t need to approach anybody for assisting in creation of digital Bangladesh. But advisory supports from international organizations where Bangladesh is a member country may be welcome. We have sufficient number of human resources and abundance of technology supports. Our liberation war of 1971 reminds us the capabilities of the young freedom fighters. Firm determination of the Prime Minister is the most powerful tool to fulfill the desire for creation of digital Bangladesh and the best weapon to win the war against digital illiteracy in Bangladesh.
