Nobel Peace Prize

The Nobel Prize is a Swedish prize, established in the 1895 Will of Swedish chemist and inventor Alfred Nobel, it was first awarded in Physics, Chemistry, Physiology, Literature and Peace in 1901. The Nobel Prizes in the specific disciplines (Physics, Chemistry,  Medicine, and Literature) and the Prize in Economics are widely regarded as the most prestigious award one can receive in those fields. The Nobel Peace Prize conveys social prestige and is often politically controversial. So far known, the Nobel Peace Prizes    have been awarded to 96 individuals and 20 organizations since 1901.
Kofi Annan, Secretary-General of the United Nations was awarded Nobel Peace Prize on 12 October 2001 for his vision and integrity. Through his strong personal commitment, he has increased the credibility of the United Nations as new millennium started.
The Norwegian Nobel Committee decided to award the 1989 Nobel Peace Prize to the 14th Dalai Lama, Tenzin Gyatso, the religious and political leader of the Tibetan people. The Committee wants to emphasize the fact that the Dalai Lama in his struggle for the liberation of Tibet consistently has opposed the use of violence. He has instead advocated peaceful solutions based upon tolerance and mutual respect in order to preserve the historical and cultural heritage of his people. The Dalai Lama has developed his philosophy of peace from a great reverence for all things living and upon the concept of universal responsibility embracing all mankind, as well as nature. In the opinion of the Committee, the Dalai Lama has come forward with constructive and forward-looking proposals for the solution of international conflicts, human rights issues, and global environmental problems.
Nelson Mandela, the President of the African National Congress received award of the Nobel Peace Prize at Oslo, Norway in December 10, 1993.  Aung San Suu Kyi from Miyanmar received Nobel Peace Prize in 1991 and Yasir Arafat in 1994. Jimmy Carter received Nobel Peace Prize in 2002. Martin Luther King Jr. received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964, becoming the youngest man to receive the prestigious Prize. Al Gore won the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize. As vice president of the USA, he used the attention to warn that global warming is "the greatest challenge we've ever faced”, “the climate crisis is not a political issue it is a moral and spiritual challenge to all of humanity" he said.

Going through the email message received on 29th June 2009, I came to understand that it was the expectation of a member of parliament (MP) who proposed that the parliament adopt a resolution urging the Nobel Committee to honor Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina with the Nobel Peace Prize. The proposal was greeted with table thumping by the ruling MPs in the House. Later on, too much criticisms and comments on the issue both positive and negative came to my notice and it is quite natural.

Criticizing is encouraged everywhere in the developed societies. The reason is almost everybody may make mistakes in his or her activities. It is true for individual as well as for a political leader. The criticisms should be in sober and acceptable language that raises importance of the person who makes criticisms and comments on the issues.

Bangladesh is an independent country and we are the citizens of the country. We elect our Prime Minister and MPs casting our valuable votes in favour of suitable candidates like other independent countries. Some governments become successful under the leadership of their elected head of the government in respective country but many governments in different countries cannot succeed. We have achieved our independence or freedom about four decades ago - a reasonable time for shaping the country as a developed country. We have all kinds of resources to make "a world wide recognized developed country". Unfortunately, it was not possible, the reasons are known to us very well. This time Sheikh Hasina's government has come to power with huge supports that indicates people have faiths on her with the expectations that Sheikh Hasina as head of the government will bring positive changes through utilization of relevant new technologies in all sectors. Sheikh Hasina’s Digital Bangladesh concept reached the general mass before the election held in December that attracted young generation towards Sheikh Hasina, the Chief of Awami League that won the victory.

I have no hesitation to say; just announcement of digital Bangladesh is not enough, it needs clarified to the common people who are still in confusion what digital Bangladesh is actually. As a senior scientist and technologist my prediction is if present government can utilize concepts of digital Bangladesh in real ways and real purposes like elimination of corruption from the society, overcoming traditional political systems etc., Bangladesh will emerge as a developed country in a short time. In doing so, Bangladesh will create an excellent example in the globe; how to make a corruption free country. Not only Bangladesh but there is many countries that suffer from serious corruption. Sheikh Hasina’s government possesses huge positive sides to make Bangladesh a corruption free country. If opportunity comes, I will surely mention the points or issues and if needed, I will explain them to the interested Bangladeshi brothers and sisters living at home or abroad. Our Prime Minister needs to identify the real experts and talents who can make it happen in a reasonable span of time.

Nobel Prize is for the people who make some thing extraordinary for the betterment of the human beings and create peaceful atmosphere in the society. Corruption is a serious disease, even more dangerous than Cancer, if this fatal disease remove from the societies in Bangladesh using relevant technology under the leadership of Sheikh Hasina, Can the Nobel Peace Prize remain far from Bangladesh?
