Obsolete Technology in Bangladesh

Bangladesh Telecommunications Company Ltd. (BTCL) is possibly going to close its telegraph offices all over Bangladesh based on the report of Anti Corruption Commission (ACC).  On 27th of January 2007, the reporter of the daily Star wrote that there has been hardly any work at telegraph offices after 1999 when mobile and Internet technology had started spreading fast. As a result the people employed in the telegraph offices don’t have any work. Technological development is now so fast and rapid that it has become very difficult for many developing countries to adjust with rest of the world.

Copper cables were mainly used as media to transfer messages from one place to another using indigenous/traditional technology in old days. As a technologist in relevant field, it is my request to the concerned authority not to destroy the old equipment, instruments, tools and materials of BTCL, but to protect them for reuse. Those instruments may not be useful to BTCL but become very useful to others. The universities need those tools and materials for their digital laboratories where subjects like electronics, telecommunications and electricity are taught at graduate and masters levels. Many universities cannot afford to buy tools as required. The obsolete tools of the BTCL can be the unique assets for the innocent students who are deprived of using them, though the national assets are being destroyed, damaged and looted by the people of the country. A student coming out from department of electronics and telecommunications as a fresh graduate can be considered an excellent and efficient resource person for Sheikh Hasina’s Digital Bangladesh. The concerned authority is expected to look into the matter for greater interest of the nation.
