Remembering a Scientist after Death

UNESCO stands for United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization. Initially there was no UNESCO rather it was UNECO that means Science was not under consideration even in the developed countries of Europe and America. The delegates meeting at the Institute of Civil Engineers in London on 1st November 1945 had been invited to the founding conference of the United Nations Organization for Education and Culture, UNECO. Several scientists, including Julian Huxley, who was to become the first Director-General had been campaigning for months for the inclusion of science both in the name of the new organization and its programme of action. The President of the Conference, Ellen Wilkinson, Minister of Education of the UK, proposed in her augural address to put S for Science between the E of education and C for culture. (From World Science). Thus UNECO was transformed to UNESCO.

Only 64 years ago, people were wondering what science will do to the society. Similarly, most people of Bangladesh today don’t know what science can do for the society or the community. Recent death of Nuclear Scientist Dr. M.A. Wajed Miah has enabled the nation to realize the importance of science particularly nuclear science. At the moment the country is suffering from huge shortage of energy in almost all sectors. The common people and the politicians now realize what blander they did giving no importance to the suggestion of Dr. Wajed Mia for establishment of Nuclear Power Project in Ruppur, Pabna long time ago.

It should be remembered that without the help of science, policy makers are unable to strike the necessary balance between the often-conflicting goals of economic growth, social equity and the protection of the Earth’s resources and life support systems.

Some death reminds us the importance of the person and the death of Nuclear Scientist Dr. M.A. Wajed Mia is a bright example to let people know Dr.Wajed Mia and his profession. People from all corners are found to discuss the name of Dr. Wajed Mia. As a scientist how much famous he was and how much honest, sincere and well behaved person he was - that was the matter of discussions among most people. He has been accepted to the society as one of the most respectable persons in the country. Scientists and the scientific communities at home and abroad feel proud of him. Through discussion on life of Dr. Wajed Mia, people have started to realize the importance of scientists for the country. At the present crisis in electricity, the wise and knowledgeable persons of the country are very much feeling the necessity of the service of world famous scientist Dr. M.A.Wajed Mia. He was a Scientist with vast knowledge and experience in his area of expertise.  Moreover, he had exceptional connections with scientists all over the globe.

Let us take Dr. Wajed Mia as an ideal scientist. We can benefit through discussion on his life. Hundreds of young graduates in science and technology are coming out from the university every year. But they seem very frustrated. They don’t know what future is waiting for them. They don’t know where to approach to sell their expertise. I have seen many brilliant students with unique results in very demanding subjects like Information Technology, Biotechnology and Pharmacy are not getting jobs. They don’t know where to apply even. They are loosing confidence on science subjects observing their guardians’ frustrations as well. At least they need some guide lines at the moment and some one to give them hopes that they have not done mistakes in choosing science as their career path

In such situations, a scientific foundation or institution can be established in the name of Dr. M.A. Wajed Mia. For example; Dr. C V Raman University has been established at Raipur, India to educate the young generations on nuclear science as well as to follow the life style of the great scientist. In fact there are lots to learn from the life of Dr. Wajed Mia for science students and the scientists as well. As a Nuclear Physicist (nuclear instrumentation) and former engineer of U.S. Geological Survey, I had unique chance to work with Dr. M.A. Wajed Mia as our Chief Scientist (team leader) on a national project on exploration of Beach Sand Minerals (Zircon, Ilmenite, Rutile, Garnet, Titenium etc) in 1993-95. I had also scope to work with Prof. Santosh Choubey, the Vice-Chancellor of the C V Raman University in India. Professor Santosh is also a Nuclear Physicist who is leading scientific activities in India to implement the concepts and ideas of Nobel Laureate, Scientist Dr. C V Raman in Nuclear Physics (Raman effect).

From personal experience of works for several decades at home and abroad on science and technology development, it can be stated with full confidence that a scientific research oriented institute if established in the name of Dr. Wajed Mia with concrete objectives of scientific advancements, it will give tremendous results to the society and the modern citizens of digital Bangladesh will benefit fantastically.
