Friendships develop through physical familiarities from childhood mainly at school level but the nature of friendships differs with age and enviroment. Since 90, electronic media has given us a unique opportunity to meet many wonderful people of the world. They may be refered as “digital friends” because, for the most cases, we have never actually met. Despite the lack of physical familiarity, I have followed their lives through the things they share on line and have got to know many of them quite well. It is a very odd feeling when some body physically meets his digital friend for the first time.
For the scientists and researchers, digital friendship is an essential part of their activities. They need to share their research works frequently with the digital friends working in different regions of the world on similar fields. They become dependent on each other. As such depth of friendships develops tremendously which cannot be created on any other means. There is a lot of benefits in making friendship through digital technology. From my personal experience, I have no hesitaton to say that digital technology has enabled me to reach the sky. For example; an important and expensive book on Gender and ICT have been written jointly by Professor Eileen Trauth, Chairman, department of computer science at the Pennsylvania State Unversity, USA and me (Prof. Lutfor Rahman) but interstingly we have never seen each other. There are thousands of similar examples created by others in the country. The activities may be termed as digital works.
“Digital Bangladesh” has exploded just like a powerful “digital bomb”, the moment Sheikh Hasina uttered the term. People from all levels are very much curious to learn more about digital Bangladesh. They expect clear explanation from the proper auhority. Being a senior citizen of the country, I am writing short articles on digital activities almost everyday from my personal experience to give some ideas on activities of digital Bangladesh without taking permission from the respected Prime Minister, hoping that I will be excused for the activities of a volunteer as I did in liberation war 38 years ago.
