Bangladesh is rich in natural resources but people are poor. Lack of coordination among scientists, technologists, researchers and decision makers is the main reason of poverty in the country. Scientific knowledge of people improve lives of millions of people in the world but technological advances occur so rapidly that only a highly qualified workforce with research and training knowledge in the respective fields is able to evaluate and modify such technologies for local use. A science based technology university with research opportunities can take leading role for producing technology enabled human resources and economic development is possible through effective institution in a region.
In respect of science and technological development, Gopalgonj and its surrounding areas are far away in comparison to other areas of Bangladesh. A university might bring a tremendous change in the region in all respects. The river Modhumoti and other small rivers and canals have made the region very resourceful with huge natural and mineral resources that we need to explore soon. The youths in the region face serious challenges for their survivals but they are thirsty to learn, to know, to innovate, to discover and to acquire knowledge about the world. We have spent huge time overlooking their needs. A research oriented science and technology university should immediately be established with the possible name “University of Science and Technology Researches (USTR)”. The main objective of the university project will be to upgrade life style of people living in the region, particularly targeting people affected by the river erosion. There should be a section for research on Bangabandhu. There should also be arrangements for e-skills development among the local people so that they get direct benefits from Digital Bangladesh. The specific objectives of the e-skill development project are to create e-skills workforce in the community and to develop e-skills capacity in the society.
As a senior citizen of the region along with local people, it is our expectation that the Prime Minister will look into the matter to find possibility of establishing a research oriented science and technology university in Gopalgonj at the shortest possible time.
